Time Of Your Life, exercises and preparation
In comparison with intermediate and advanced, beginner guitar does not contain that many exercises.
Apart from Chromatic Exercises, some simple strumming exercises and a lot of reading, the most work you have at beginner is found in learning all the beginner songs.
So hopefully you have started to look at intermediate guitar for more exercises.
If not, now is the time, Time Of Your Life contain a 16th note rhythmical pattern so hurry over to intermediate rhythmical exercises and start practicing these as a part of your daily routine.
Time Of Your Life
Time Of Your Life by Green Day is a classic punk ballad that use a meditative picking pattern that I have turned into a one guitar arrangement. This means the part is slightly modified from the original in order to better carry the song on just one instrument.
First learn the song by simply playing along with the video lesson.
At this point you don’t even need to get the pattern right. Just strum the chords along with the video.
Once you can do this start working on the Etude in the Rhythm Guitar eBook.
Exercises
In the intermediate routine you will find sweeping Spyders, these are great in order to gain more control when traveling across strings.
Practice Spyder 4-6 on a daily basis from now on, leave Spyder 1-3 alone for a while.
Chord Progression
Time Of Your Life move in the classic I – IV – V movement, check the DIY TAB for other songs that use this pattern, there are plenty!
Learn from these progressions, every time you play a new song using it, compare it to previous songs you know.
There are so many hits written with these three chords it’s scary…
Next up is Beginner Guitar Lesson 12.
Happy playing!
Dan (your guitar guru)
